Extreme VR2 & VR3 Tyre Compound Guide – Which Compound Should You Choose?

Extreme VR2 & VR3 Tyre Compound Guide – Which Compound Should You Choose?

Choosing the correct tyre compound can make a significant difference to grip, performance and tyre life. Whether you're competing in a hillclimb, taking part in rallycross or enjoying a trackday at Mondello Park, the right compound depends on more than just the weather.

Extreme offers several compounds within its VR2 semi-slick range, along with the dedicated VR3 full-wet tyre.

Here's our guide to choosing the right option.

Extreme VR2 W3B – Super Soft

Operating temperature: 0–30°C

Designed for very low tyre temperatures, the W3B offers excellent grip in cold and damp conditions.

It's particularly useful for short competitive runs where getting heat into the tyres quickly is important. It can also work on very cold, dry tarmac.

Best suited to: Hillclimbs, sprints, cold-weather rallycross and short competitive stages.

Consider: The exceptionally soft compound can overheat quickly in warm conditions or during sustained circuit driving.

Extreme VR2 R5B – Soft

Operating temperature: 15–50°C

The R5B provides strong grip in cooler conditions while handling more heat than the W3B.

It's a popular type of compound for drivers seeking maximum performance over shorter distances, particularly with lightweight competition cars.

Best suited to: Sprints, rallycross, time attack and shorter track sessions in cooler weather.

Consider: Extended hard driving, particularly in heavier cars, can push the compound beyond its ideal operating temperature.

Extreme VR2 R7B – Medium

Operating temperature: 30–80°C

The R7B strikes an excellent balance between grip, heat resistance and durability.

For many drivers attending dry circuit trackdays, this is a sensible starting point. Its broader working temperature range makes it suitable for sustained performance driving.

Best suited to: Trackdays, dry circuit racing and longer competitive sessions.

Consider: Very cold conditions or particularly short runs may not generate enough heat for optimum performance.

Extreme VR2 R9B – Hard

Operating temperature: 50–110°C

The R9B is designed to work at considerably higher tyre temperatures.

It's particularly useful for heavier, more powerful cars or sustained circuit driving where softer compounds may struggle with excess heat.

Best suited to: Hot, dry circuits, heavy competition cars and longer high-temperature sessions.

Consider: The harder compound needs sufficient heat to work effectively and may not suit lightweight cars on short, cold runs.

Extreme VR3 – Full Wet

Unlike the semi-slick VR2, the VR3 is a dedicated wet competition tyre.

Its directional tread pattern is designed to disperse water, providing traction and control when a semi-slick is no longer the appropriate choice.

Best suited to: Wet circuit racing, heavy rain, wet rally stages and standing water.

Consider: Full-wet tyres can overheat and suffer accelerated wear as a circuit dries out.

Extreme Compound Comparison

Compound Hardness Tyre temperature Treadwear
VR2 W3B Super Soft 0–30°C 50
VR2 R5B Soft 15–50°C 80
VR2 R7B Medium 30–80°C 140
VR2 R9B Hard 50–110°C 200
VR3 W3B Full Wet / Super Soft Varies by specification 50

Important: Tyre Temperature Is Not Air Temperature

A common mistake is choosing a tyre compound based entirely on the weather forecast.

The operating temperatures above refer to the actual tyre rubber, not the surrounding air.

Vehicle weight, power, suspension setup, driving style and session length can all have a significant influence on tyre temperatures.

A heavy, powerful car can overheat a soft compound on a cold day, while a lightweight, well-set-up competition car might require a softer compound even in warmer weather.
